How to get a Greek certificate without travelling
Documentary Greece lived a silent revolution: gov.gr turned one of Europe's most paper-bound systems into a digital counter — records from the lixiarcheío (the municipal civil registry) come out online for those with Greek credentials. For the diaspora, the challenge remains double: the remote request without the credentials, and the alphabet — every Greek document needs explained transliteration in the chain.
The lixiarcheío and the dimotológio
The ληξιαρχική πράξη (the registry act — birth, marriage, death) lives at the lixiarcheío of the event's municipality; in parallel, the dimotológio (the municipal citizens' roll) keeps the family record — and for Greeks, the pistopoiitikó (certificate) from the dimotológio is as common a process piece as the act itself. Both counters live at the town hall (dímos).
Universal civil records date from 1931 onwards (with earlier implementations in the cities); before that, Greek life is in the Orthodox parishes' books — and in the mitroa arrénon, the male rolls the state kept for military service, precious for genealogy.
gov.gr — for those with the keys
With Taxisnet credentials (the Greek tax login), acts and certificates come out of gov.gr in validated PDF — digital Greece is real and good. Without the credentials (the Brazil case without a connection), the path is the classic one: email/phone to the lixiarcheío, the Greek consulate (which brokers for citizens and descendants in several acts) or someone on site.
Who can request
The holder and family; third parties with an exousiodótisi (authorisation — with the signature certified via KEP or consulate, the Greek standard) or a power of attorney. The lixiarcheía serve the diaspora out of habit — Greece has been exporting people for centuries and the counters know the descendant's script.
The typical route
Act from the lixiarcheío (via consulate, authorisation or mission) → apostille at the region's Decentralised Administration (the Αποκεντρωμένη Διοίκηση — the apostille authority for municipal acts; courts for judicial ones) → dispatch → sworn Greek translation in Brazil — rare; and with the names' transliteration explained, because Παπαδόπουλος became Papadopoulos, Papadópulos and Papadopulo in the same Brazilian family.
Transliteration is the Greek minefield: the same name comes out of the Greek alphabet in three legitimate forms. Processes require the explained bridge (the translator's note) between the original Greek and each Latin form in the chain — list all the family's spellings before requesting anything.
