How to get a Slovak certificate without traveling
Documentary Slovakia is the Czech system's sister — the municipal matriky, the 100-year rule, the generous archives — with a historical twist: until 1918 the country was UPPER HUNGARY, and the civil records of 1895-1918 (and the ecclesiastical ones before) speak Hungarian, with the places under Magyar names. The matrika and the rule
The acts live at the matričný úrad (the municipal matrika) — the rodný list (birth), sobášny list (marriage), úmrtný list (death). The rule: ~100 years, and the book migrates to the state archives (štátne archívy) — where research opens up and digitization advances (the portals and microfilms cover the territory well).
Upper Hungary in the books
Civil registration arrived in 1895 — Hungarian, like the State of the era: the acts of 1895-1918 use Magyar forms, names in the Hungarian order and places under Hungarian toponyms (Bratislava was Pozsony; Košice, Kassa). Before 1895: the churches — Catholic, Lutheran (strong in Slovakia!), Greek-Catholic and Jewish — in the archives' fonds.
Who can request
The Czech-Slovak standard: those legitimated by connection at the matrika; open access at the archives once the rule expires. The splnomocnenie (power of attorney) with notarized signature enables third parties — the usual Central European ritual.
The typical route
Duplikát at the matrika (or the archive's certification) → apostille (the ministry/regional authorities depending on the document — Bratislava concentrates) → courier via Vienna/Bratislava (3-5 days) → Slovak sworn translation in Brazil — rare; the EU multilinguals and the Hungarian pieces (a Hungarian translation!) season the design per document.
The same ancestor may have three spellings: the modern Slovak (Kováč), the Hungarian of the record (Kovács) and the Brazilianized one (Kovac or Covac). And the PLACE under two names. The equivalence table (names + toponyms) is the master dossier of any Slovak search.
