Requesting a North Korean certificate: the truth about the routes

2 min read · King Hands practical guide

There is no counter to knock on from outside: a regular request for a North Korean certificate by a private individual abroad has no route. What really exists: the SOUTH KOREAN registry for defectors (the established route) and searches in the historical archives of the South and Japan for pre-division roots.

The real routes

  • Defectors: the South Korean process creates the registry — the documentary basis of the new life.
  • Pre-1945/53 roots: the Japanese colonial koseki and the South Korean separated-families holdings.
  • Extremely rare diplomatic cases: outside the scope of any serious private service.

What not to do

Do not pay for 'northern certificates' — the market is one of forgeries and risks. A forged document burns the case; a real attempt can expose people. The honest route exists and is the alternative.
