Honesty first: the North Korean documentary corridor is, IN PRACTICE, CLOSED. The country keeps internal civil registries — but there is no regular route for a private individual abroad to obtain certificates from there: no accessible legalisation chain, no executors who could operate, no courier. Why the corridor is closed
North Korean registration exists (the state documents its citizens rigorously) — but access from outside does not: there is no usable consular rite for certificates, no independent executors are possible, and the very attempt could expose people inside the country. No escrow design solves what reality forbids — and promising otherwise would be selling dangerous smoke.
The South Korean route for defectors
The real, established alternative: SOUTH KOREA considers North Koreans its nationals — a defector who arrives creates the South Korean family registry (through the protection and resettlement process), and THAT registry becomes the documentary basis of the new life: passport, certificates, South Korean Hague apostille. The world accepts it; the South Korean corridor (which King Hands covers) takes over from there.
The historical fragments
For families with roots predating the division (pre-1945/53): the Japanese colonial-era records (the colonial koseki!) and the South Korean holdings of separated families sometimes document northern lines — a specialised search in the archives of the SOUTH and of Japan is the real route for historical roots.
