How to request a certificate at a Portuguese conservatória
The conservatória is the Portuguese registry office — and it holds an advantage that saves trips: since the civil registry is on a national network, any conservatória issues a certificate of any record in the country. Whoever goes (or sends someone) to the right counter with the right data walks out with the document the same day.
Any counter works — choose the convenient one
Unlike Italy, there is no need to go to the municipality of the event: a Lisbon conservatória issues the record entered in Bragança. In practice, you choose the conservatória (or the Loja de Cidadão, which houses IRN counters) for convenience — and for the queue: the central ones in big cities have electronic tickets and, for several services, online booking.

What unlocks same-day issuance:
- The full name of the person on the record and the date of the event (even approximate).
- The concelho/freguesia of the record — without it the national search works, but with it it is immediate.
- The format: cópia integral (full transcript, for proceedings) or narrativa (summary).
- The purpose (“for use abroad”) — it guides the clerk on copies and stamps.
- The requester's ID; for ordinary certificates, Portuguese access is broad.
Old records: the door changes
Records over 100 years old migrate from the conservatórias to the District Archives — and consultation becomes free and, to an enormous extent, online (the digitised parish and civil books). Locate the record from home; request the archive's certified reproduction when the proceeding requires paper. Another queue, another fee, another counter — but the same city, in general.
Leaving the counter: the next steps
Check on the spot (names, annotations, stamp), apostille at the PGR — Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra or Évora — and dispatch. A well-planned local mission does conservatória + PGR + post in the same working day; it is among Europe's fastest errands.
