How to order a certificate at a Brazilian cartório
The civil registry cartório is Brazil's most familiar counter — and it still hides tricks few people use: the new copy can come out of ANY cartório (via the CRC), the digital certificate is as good as the physical one for many uses, and the livro/folha/termo numbers turn any request into a matter of minutes.
Livro, folha and termo
Every old family certificate carries the magic triad: the entry's livro (book), folha (page) and termo (number) — and the cartório where it was recorded. With that data, the request is direct. Without it, the CRC Nacional searches the indexes by name and parentage — it works, with extra time. Photograph the family's old certificates: they are the documentary treasure map.

Since the national interconnection, you order at any cartório the certificate of another: the local counter requests it via the CRC and delivers in days — on paper or digital. Fees follow YOUR state's table (issuance + relay). For anyone far from the cartório of origin, it is the difference between a trip and a walk.
The formats at the counter
- Breve relato (standard): issued on the spot for the office's own entries.
- Inteiro teor (typed or photocopy): may require an application and processing days — and it is the format for proceedings abroad; request it explicitly.
- Digital certificate (signed PDF): issued by the CRC/e-cartório, widely accepted in Brazil.
Fees and free issuance
Fees vary by state (public fee tables). Worth knowing: the FIRST birth and death certificate is free by law; free reissuance exists for those who declare need under the law — a right the counter sometimes forgets to mention.
