Brazilian certificate: standard or full transcript?
Every foreign proceeding involving Brazilian documents runs into the same question at the cartório: “simples or inteiro teor?”. The wrong answer costs a full round of issuance, apostille and international shipping. The logic is the same as full transcripts everywhere — but with Brazilian particularities worth knowing.
The Brazilian formats
- Certidão em breve relato — the modern standard format (the standardised summary): the entry's essential data, updated.
- Certidão de inteiro teor — the complete transcript of the entry as recorded, with ALL the averbações (annotations): rectifications, acknowledgements, divorces, name changes.
- Inteiro teor em forma reprográfica — the certified photocopy of the book's page: the most faithful version of all, required by some destinations (Italian proceedings frequently ask for it).
Why foreign proceedings ask for the full transcript
For the usual reason: the annotations tell the complete story. A Brazilian entry from 1950 may carry a 1980 spelling rectification and a late acknowledgement — exactly what connects (or explains) the ends of the document chain. The modern summary shows the final state; the foreign reviewer wants the path. When in doubt — and especially for Italy and Portugal — inteiro teor, and in photocopy form when the destination accepts it.
How to order correctly
In the request (CRC or cartório), state explicitly: “certidão de inteiro teor, em forma reprográfica” (or typed, per the destination's requirement). Some cartórios ask for a reason for the inteiro teor — “for a proceeding abroad” solves it. And order multiple copies in the same issuance: each proceeding retains its own, and a second round costs the complete international cycle.
The typical package for use in Europe
A recent inteiro teor + apostille at a cartório + translation at destination (Italy: a translator in Italy or a sworn one accepted by the consulate; Portugal: none!). And the check that saves months: spellings and dates coherent across the certificate, the passport and the foreign documents of the chain — a Brazilian divergence is fixed in Brazil, by annotation/rectification, BEFORE the document travels.
Frequently asked questions
Does my old birth certificate work?+
As a data source (livro, folha, termo), yes — keep it. As a proceeding document, no: destinations require recent issuance (6-12 months). The entry does not age; the certificate does.
Typed or photocopy inteiro teor?+
It depends on the destination: Italian proceedings frequently require the photocopy form (the photo of the book); others accept the typed one. Ask the receiving party BEFORE issuing — one line of e-mail saves an entire cycle.
