How to collect a document already issued in the UK
The United Kingdom solves almost everything by post — in-person document collection is the exception, not the rule. The practical consequence for whoever is in Brazil is a useful inversion: the typical British mission is not “go collect”, it is “receive, apostille and dispatch”.
Where collection really exists
- Local register offices: certificates ordered there may have counter collection (sometimes same-day — the local shortcut the national GRO doesn't offer).
- Premium services with a counter (premium legalisation for businesses, urgent passports): niches with appointments.
- Documents held in proceedings (returned originals): collection per the body's instruction.
- Everything else: post — Royal Mail is the backbone of British bureaucracy.
Authorising a third party
When there is collection, authorisation is dispatched the British way: a simple authorisation letter — who authorises, who collects, what, the order reference, signature — and both IDs. No notary, no seal: the UK trusts plain paper and punishes fraud afterwards, instead of bureaucratising beforehand.
The British address as strategy
The logistics design that saves weeks: have the GRO deliver to a UK address (an acquaintance's, or that of whoever executes the mission), from where the document proceeds to the FCDO apostille and from there, tracked, to Brazil. Delivering straight to Brazil and then discovering the apostille = the document returning to London — the corridor's anti-pattern.
In hand, before proceeding
The check: long form (with the parents!), spellings, the GRO/NRS/GRONI seal. The British certificate has no expiry date — but proceedings ask for recent issuance; confirm before reusing an old one from the drawer.
