How to request a certificate at the Chilean Civil Registry

4 min read · King Hands practical guide

The Chilean request is a two-minute form — when you know what to fill in. The circunscripción (the Registry's territorial division), the RUN when there is one, and the right certificate type: the complete kit of the most efficient portal in the Americas.

The portal and the open certificates

At registrocivil.cl, the certificates 'para todo trámite' come out without authentication for the standard cases — birth, marriage, death. The version with ClaveÚnica (residents) opens additional variants. The PDF arrives by email in minutes, with code verification.

The data kit

  • The person's RUN, when it exists — the master key.
  • Without a RUN: full name, date and the CIRCUNSCRIPCIÓN of the record (the era's comuna/office — the family's old certificates mention it).
  • Parents' names to disambiguate homonyms.
  • The type: nacimiento/matrimonio/defunción — and the purpose guides variants.

Old acts: the Registry's archive

What the portal doesn't return (undigitised acts, complex rectifications) is requested from the Civil Registry's archive — by form and with timelines of days to a few weeks. Chilean retroactive digitisation is deep; the archive is the exception, not the rule.

The pre-1885: the parishes

Colonial and early republican baptisms and marriages live at the parishes and the archives of the Archbishopric of Santiago (and diocesan ones) — massively microfilmed by the genealogy projects. Online research locates; the certification comes from the ecclesiastical institution with a modest fee.

Frequently asked questions

What is the circunscripción?+

The Civil Registry's territorial unit — the Chilean 'registry office' of the act's era. Old certificates cite it; with it, manual searches become direct queries.

Is the free certificate worth the same as a paid one?+

The 'para todo trámite' is the full official one — the gratuity is public policy, not a second-class version. Chile simply solved it.
