Russian svidetelstvo: which one to request
The Russian choice has three layers: the format (svidetelstvo or spravka), the era (ZAGS or confessional register) — and the layer zero many skip: the COUNTRY. The Russian Empire became ten republics; 'born in Russia' on the old Brazilian certificate frequently points to today's Ukraine, Poland or the Baltics.
The formats
- Povtornoe svidetelstvo — the certificate's duplicate: the full document, standardised, apostillable.
- Spravka from the ZAGS — the attestation about the record (including of non-existence): the processes' complementary piece.
- Archive certification (arkhivnaya spravka/vypiska) — for the pre-ZAGS acts: the confessional entry certified.
Layer zero: the right country
