Swiss certificate: which format to order

3 min read · King Hands practical guide

The Swiss choice has three boxes and a prior question that orders them: what does the proceeding need — the act, the family or the history? The act lives in Infostar; the family, in the Heimatort's Familienregister; the history, in the archives and parishes.

The formats

  • The standard Auszug/extrait — the modern register's individual act: birth, marriage, death.
  • The CIEC multilingual — the same act in international format: it circulates without translation in a good part of Europe and spares the page.
  • The Familienregister extract — the Heimatort's historical family sheet: generations, marriages and children in one piece — the treasure format of Swiss document chains.

The 1876 frontier

The federal Swiss civil register starts in 1876 — before that, the books belong to the churches (and to sparse cantonal registers). For pre-1876: parish and archive certifications, in the era's language and handwriting. The era decides the document, as in all of Europe.

The Heimatort's role in the choice

One person's chain: the act's Auszug solves it. A family's chain (typical in descent proceedings): the Heimatort's Familienregister delivers in one piece what would require six Auszüge — cheaper as a set and more eloquent for whoever reviews. The question to the recipient about accepting the family extract is worth francs and weeks.

The typical package for use in Brazil

The chosen format + the cantonal apostille + translation from the language (or the multilingual that waives it where accepted). Trilingual spellings checked against the chain — and the Heimatort noted forever: it is the key to any future order.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Familienregister still issued?+

The closed ones (pre-Infostar) are certified by the registries/archives as historical documents — and it is exactly that certification that proceedings use.

Does a marriage Auszug show the parents?+

Modern Swiss formats carry parentage and complete data — the tradition of the meticulous register. Confirm the cantonal variant in the order when parentage is the point.
