How to request an acte at a French mairie

The right mairie — and the Nantes exception

The acte sits at the mairie of the commune of the event. The important exception: records of French citizens' events abroad (births, marriages in other countries) are centralised at the Service central d'état civil, in Nantes — the most requested address in Franco-Brazilian genealogy, with its own online form.

The request kit

What the counter (or the form) will ask:

• Name, date of the event and the commune — and, for the copie intégrale, the PARENTAGE (the parents' names): it is the French security key; without it, only the extrait sans filiation comes out.
• Your identity and the connection (holder, ascendant, descendant, spouse) for protected records.
• The format: copie intégrale for proceedings; extrait for simple uses.
• For records over 75 years old: none of that — they became public, anyone may request.

Counter, post or online

Online (service-public.fr) covers most communes and is the obvious first move — free, with postal delivery. Traditional post always works (a plain letter with the details + a stamped return envelope for within France). The counter steps in for what remains: mairies outside the digital circuit, searches with incomplete details, urgency — and it has the French charm of the hours: the sacred lunch break, and villages whose mairie opens only some mornings.

Leaving the mairie

The check (expected mentions marginales? correct parentage?), then the French apostille — the competence model changed recently; confirm the current authority for your document before planning the leg — and the shipping. Since issuance is free, the golden rule: order multiple copies at once.
